Our 2018 Chapter Meeting Program Highlights

Our 2017 / 2018 programs are shaping up very nicely. Please stay tuned to this page for specific dates. Or you can always check our SVATU Google Calendar here to stay up to date.

Tim Romano is an impressive and local Boulder County photographer who has had the pleasure of fly fishing and photographing some of the best fly fishing waters in the world. Involved with many projects from Field & Stream to Angling Trade, Romano has enjoyed many exciting travels in the last 15 years. Tim’s family is from the Boulder area and Tim will have a wealth of information on fly fishing travel, fly fishing photography, and hopefully some great pointers on how to improve you or your spouse’s exploits on the water.

David Nickum, Executive Director of Colorado Trout Unlimited, will be speaking as well.  The focal point will be how CTU supports local chapters and how local chapters support CTU and the National organization.  Grass root efforts, support, and engagement at the local level are extremely important in these endeavors.  David will give us insight as to how vital the local chapters are to the overall scheme and mission of CTU in the state of Colorado and nationally for TU.

Wyoming Anglers out of Casper, WY, will also be presenting.  There are few places better to indulge yourself than in Casper, WY. The North Platte River provides some of the best fly fishing anywhere in the U.S. In fact, American Angler Magazine named the Grey Reef section of the North Platte River the “Number One Big Fish Destination” in 2006. The Miracle Mile and Grey Reef tailwaters are recognized as Blue Ribbon Wyoming fly fishing destinations known for trophy sized Rainbow, Brown, and Cutthroat Trout.

Paul Vertrees: A fifth-generation native Coloradan, Paul grew up in the shadow of the Mt. Evans Wilderness, in Colorado’s Front Range. He has been fly-fishing for over thirty years, and in 2009 he embraced Tenkara, the traditional Japanese method of fly-fishing. He has extensive experience in lightweight backpacking and backcountry angling on remote streams and high lakes.  In 2012, Paul became one of the first certified professional Tenkara guides in the state of Colorado, and he guided tenkara trips for four seasons in the San Juan Mountain backcountry in Colorado for RIGS Fly Shop and Guide Service (Colorado’s first tenkara guide service). He now works as a tenkara guide for Royal Gorge Anglers in Canon City, Colorado, guiding on the Arkansas River and its tributaries, and hosting annual trips to remote Alaska. In addition to being a regular contributor to Tenkara Angler Magazine, his writing and photographs have appeared online on his personal blog, Tenkara Tracks, with guest articles for Tenkara USA, in Backcountry Journal, in the book Tenkara Fly Fishing: Insights and Strategies. Most recently, he was featured in an Outdoor Life Magazine article in 2017.  He has also provided tenkara presentations and demos for Backcountry Hunters and Anglers’ national rendezvous, at the Tenkara Winter Series, the Midwest Tenkara Fest, and tenkara presentations at the fly fishing show in Denver. Paul lives with his family on the banks of the Arkansas River, in Canon City, Colorado.

Cole Glen from San Juan Anglers is also on the calendar! Cole will be talking about fly fishing Southwest Colorado in Durango and the San Juan River.

Karen Wogsland and the Colorado Water Trust are in the fall lineup as well.  The Colorado Water Trust was formed in 2001 to partner with Colorado's Instream Flow Program and amplify its work by supporting and promoting voluntary, market-based efforts to protect and restore Colorado’s streamflows. Today, the Colorado Water Trust is the only nonprofit organization solely dedicated to restoring flows on Colorado's rivers using market-based transactions.
